Discussion about this date:
I was 18 in the July. An Everton Football Club supporter and season ticket holder. Travelled by train approx 150 miles to watch Everton in blue jerseys play Newcastle in their black & white stripes. On the train I could see misty tall hills off in the distance, which was possibly the Yorkshire Moors. Came out of the station to lovely mild, clear weather and a busy, trendy, sort of skyscraper in Newcastle city centre, with lots of department store shoppers walking by.
Everton managed an away goalless draw and I remember little other than I was behind the Everton support goal end and Newcastle were lively and attacking often but could not score and never looked as though they would.
Someone said as the match finished, "Be careful I hear Newcastle support are going to the station to attack leaving Everton support. I hid my blue and white scarf inside my zip up trendy surfer jacket; I saw no trouble what so ever.
300 mile round trip from my parents' house arriving back in the evening, but a pleasant day of sunshine, football, one point for an away draw…. and the above memories made.
72 now and still in good health, sort of!
