Take me back to October 16, 1999

Let's take a walk down memory lane.

It is Saturday, October 16, 1999. Babies who are born today will have the star sign Libra. The work week is over and Saturday has finally come, so people are spending time with their kids, going to bars, shopping, playing video games, and watching sports.

The summer is long gone. Temperatures have become much cooler, and the evenings are beginning to get darker. There is a fresh, earthy scent in the air, and fallen leaves have carpeted driveways, lawns, pathways, and sidewalks. In America, the song "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey & Jay-Z is at the top of the singles charts, while "Blue" by Eiffel 65 is the number-one song in the UK.

Bill Clinton is the President of the United States, and the movie Fight Club is at the top of the box office. Tony Blair is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The CD is quickly becoming the dominant format for music, and people are buying portable players such as the "Discman". Consequently, sales of cassette tapes are continuing to decline.

In fashion, bright and metallic colors are all the rage—a big change from the darker "grunge" colors of the early 1990s. Women are wearing maxi skirts, bell bottoms, knee boots, crop tops, tube tops, slip dresses, maxi coats, and platform shoes. Meanwhile, a lot of men have ditched their grunge and skater clothes in favor of a "dress casual" look. They are also beginning to cut their hair shorter. A relatively new form of communication called "text messaging" is becoming more widespread. Although the technology has been around since the mid-1990s, it was only recently that cell providers allowed users to send SMS messages to people on different networks. It's 1999, so radio stations are being dominated by the likes of Cher, TLC, Monica, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Santana and Ricky Martin.

The Nokia 3210 is currently one of the most popular cellphones on the market. Pokemon has become one of the most popular franchises in the world, as trading cards, toys and handheld games gross over one billion dollars. If you were to travel back to this day, notable figures such as Walter Payton, Big Pun, Jim Varney, and Tom Landry would all still be alive.

On TV, people are watching popular shows such as "Friends", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Ally McBeal", and "Freaks and Geeks". Meanwhile, gamers are playing titles such as "Tenchu: Stealth Assassins", "Soulcalibur", "Silent Hill", and "Street Fighter Alpha 3". Kids and teenagers are watching TV shows such as "Blue's Clues", "Daria", "Men in Black: The Series", and "Bob the Builder".

Popular toys at the moment include Screwball Scramble, Fisher-Price Great Adventures Castle, the Game Boy Color, and Rescue Heroes figures.
