Shane

"Poker Face" is almost certainly one of those songs that defined the late 2000s. I always think of my college days in 2009 whenever I hear it. My friend was obsessed with the song and played it on repeat.

Little did we realize it at the time, but the release of Android sped up society's move towards smartphones, social media apps, and all that jazz. The iPhone had been released one year earlier. However, many of us considered it to be too expensive. Android was more accessible because it was released on cheaper devices. Suddenly, everyone began logging onto Facebook via the app instead of the website. Some even cancelled their broadband as they now had 3G on their phones.

The Android and the iPhone marked the beginning of everyone's shift towards mobile Internet.

In 2006 or 2007, one of my university lecturers said that most people would soon start browsing websites on their phones. We all scoffed at the idea because mobile Internet back then was slow and clunky. You had to connect via WAP, and it was very costly (I downloaded a very short video on my phone in 2004, and it cost me nearly $15!)

Non-WAP sites took ages to load and were poorly optimized for mobile browsers. It really was a different world back then. Crazy how things can change so quickly.

Take me back to September 23, 2008

Let's take a walk down memory lane.

The date is September 23, 2008, and it's a Tuesday. Babies who are born today will have the star sign Libra. Schools and colleges are starting again, and fall has officially arrived. As a result, temperatures are beginning to cool, and trees are starting to shed their leaves.

The earthy smells of autumn have started to fill the air. In America, the song "So What" by Pink is at the top of the singles charts, while "Sex On Fire" by Kings of Leon is the number-one song in the UK. George W. Bush Jnr. is the President of the United States, and the movie Lakeview Terrace is at the top of the box office.

Gordon Brown is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On television, people are watching popular shows such as "The Royle Family", "MythBusters", "Eureka", and "Sons of Anarchy". Practically every teenager and adult has a MySpace or Bebo account.

Meanwhile, in technology news, more and more people are beginning to use the Internet on their phones. This transition towards mobile Internet has been aided by the recent roll-out of faster 3G networks and the introduction of larger touchscreen phones. A growing social network called Facebook is beginning to steal users away from MySpace and Bebo. Video rental stores such as Blockbuster are struggling to compete with online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu.

It's 2008, so the music charts are filled with artists such as Flo Rida, Katy Perry, Rihanna and T.I. Barack Obama and John McCain are currently facing off against each other in the lead-up to the 2008 US Presidential Election. If you were to travel back to this day, notable figures such as John Costelloe, Test, Natasha Richardson, and Jade Goody would all still be alive.

People are playing video games such as "BioShock", "Halo 3", "FIFA 08", and "Mario Kart Wii". Children and teenagers are watching television shows such as "One Tree Hill", "Phineas and Ferb", "Wizards of Waverly Place", and "Bakugan Battle Brawlers". Children are playing with toys such as Moon Sand, Pirates of the Caribbean ship, Fast Talkin' Lightning McQueen, and FurReal Friends Butterscotch Pony.
