Take me back to October 1, 1993

Let's take a stroll down memory lane.

The date is October 1, 1993, and it's a Friday. Anyone born today will have the star sign Libra. Many people have "that Friday feeling" and are looking forward to the weekend.

The summer is long gone. Temperatures have become much cooler, and the evenings are beginning to get darker. There is a fresh, earthy scent in the air, and fallen leaves have carpeted driveways, lawns, pathways, and sidewalks. In America, the song "Dream Lover" by Mariah Carey is at the top of the singles charts, while "Boom Shake The Room" by Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince is the number-one song in the UK.

Bill Clinton is the President of the United States, and the movie Malice is at the top of the box office. John Major is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On television, people are watching popular shows such as "Only Fools and Horses", "Dinosaurs", "Mad About You", and "Frasier".

Texting is not a thing yet. Instead, people are using landline phones and pagers. Furthermore, most people have never heard of the Internet. In fashion, many of the trends from the late 1980s are still in vogue. Colored tights, denim overalls, leotards, flannel shirts, and shoulder pads are all fashionable at the moment. Grunge fashion has also become mainstream, popularizing band t-shirts, ripped jeans, mom jeans, and Doc Martens. A war is continuing to rage in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Meanwhile, in technology news, a relatively new storage format called the CD is beginning to outpace the regular cassette tape in music sales. The disc-based format gives listeners the ability to skip between songs instead of having to manually rewind and forward. A playing discs game called "Pogs" is currently spreading in popularity throughout the world. It's 1993, so radio stations are being dominated by the likes of Meat Loaf, UB40, Snow, Haddaway, Whitney Houston, Take That, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.

A new teen sitcom called "Boy Meets World" has made its debut on ABC. The new show chronicles the everyday life of Philadelphia student Cory Matthews. Meanwhile, Chuck Norris' new show "Walker, Texas Ranger" has also started showing on CBS. In Russia, the possibility of a civil war is looming after President Boris Yeltsin recently declared that the Supreme Soviet is dissolved. In response, the Russian parliament has moved to impeach Yeltsin and Vice President Alexander Rutskoy has assumed the powers of acting President of Russia. Yeltsin, who remains resolute, has cut off power and the phone service to the Russian parliament. Anti-Yeltsin protesters are now clashing with special police on the streets and members of parliament have boarded themselves inside the building. A new crime film called "A Bronx Tale" has just been released in movie theaters. A new comedy movie called "Cool Runnings", starring John Candy, has also made its big screen debut.

If you were to travel back to this day, notable figures such as Vincent Price, River Phoenix, Frank Zappa, and Charizma would all still be alive. People are playing video games such as "Road Rash II", "X-Men", "Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind", and "Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master". Kids and teenagers are watching TV shows such as "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood", "Beverly Hills, 90210", "Barney & Friends", and "Tales from the Cryptkeeper".

Children are playing with toys such as Pogo ball / Lolo ball, the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, Nerf Blaster, and California Roller Baby.
