I used to work for Waterstones (Britain's largest bookstore chain whose CEO is the director of Barnes & Noble), and anybody who came in between 2011 and 2019 will remember how Game of Thrones merchandise was some of our bestselling stock. Alongside the sales of the books and their various editions, this was our bread and butter.
I will never forget the first couple of months following the series finale in 2019, as there was this tangible pall in the air. Suddenly, all the stock that previously sold like hotcakes was now sitting untouched, gathering dust. I'd go through the aisles to neaten and organize them, and be the same as how I'd organized them the previous week. At first, Waterstones tried discounting them to 10% off, but no takers, so they went down to 15%, then 20%, then 50%. We eventually went down to 90%, and nobody wanted this garbage. I'd have been surprised if we could even give it away. The anger towards the show was palpable. It was like people just wanted to forget that it ever existed.
One morning, I came in for my shift, and my manager pointed to some boxes on the floor stacked up by the door to the stairwell. "Take those out the back to the bins," she instructs me. I take them out back to toss them - and out goes all the Game of Thrones merchandise. Products included in my box included - Targaryen diaries, House Stark key chains, Three-Eyed Ravens, little replica Longclaws, and Hand of the King pin jiggling sadly in their boxes on their short journey down to the bottom of the waste bin to end up in a remote landfill in some far land.
